Documentation standards separate professional suppliers from garage-style vendors. A blend with a full aroma profile but no safety panel is only half-documented, and that gap becomes your problem the moment it fails a test downstream.

How to read a terpene COA, line by line

Start at the top with the batch identifier and the test date. A COA that does not tie to a specific batch, or that is months stale, is not telling you about the bottle in front of you.

Next, read the dominant terpene ranking against what the blend claims to be. If a product is sold as a specific strain profile, the leading terpenes should match that strain's known chemistry. Then scan the minor terpene tail. A healthy tail of small-percentage compounds signals a full profile. A list that stops after three or four terpenes signals a blend built from the loudest notes only.

Red flags on a terpene COA

A few things should stop a deal:

  • A profile listing only three or four terpenes. That is a blend built from peaks, not a fingerprint.
  • No batch ID, or a COA that cannot be matched to the specific lot you are buying.
  • A stale test date with no recent batch data.
  • No safety panel, or a safety panel missing residual solvents or heavy metals.
  • No accredited lab named, or a refusal to share the COA at all.

Why lab accreditation matters

Not all testing carries the same weight. An accredited laboratory works to a recognized quality standard, most commonly ISO/IEC 17025. In the United States, programs like the NIST National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program assess laboratories against that standard. Accreditation means the lab's methods and results have been independently checked for competence, which is exactly the assurance you want standing behind a number on a COA.
