
Four to eight weeks from first call to production spec. That is the honest range, and the variable that moves it most is not our lab, it is how quickly you can get us a sample and how many rounds of iteration your team wants.
This is a description of the actual sequence. Not the sales version, the operational one, including the two stages where projects usually stall.

If you are not yet sure you need custom at all, start with the make-versus-buy decision. This post is about handing the problem to a lab.
What to send us
One of three things, in descending order of how well it works.
A terpene sample. Best case by a distance. Send the terpene blend you are working with, or the one you are trying to match. Physical material lets us fingerprint the real thing rather than work from someone else's numbers. What we cannot take is flower or THC vapes. Those cannot legally be mailed, so send terpenes or send paperwork instead.
A COA. Workable, with caveats, and the right route when the material itself cannot be shipped. A certificate from your lab on your flower or your product tells us what that lab found in one batch on one day using one method. If it lists eight terpenes, we can hit those eight and still miss the character of the profile, because the compounds that make a cultivar recognizable are often present at fractions of a percent and sit below the reporting threshold of a standard panel. A description. "Gassy, a bit sweet, like a Zkittlez but heavier." This works more often than you would think, but it adds rounds. Expect to be at the long end of the timeline.
The failure case is sending a description when you have a terpene sample or a COA sitting in your facility. It happens constantly. If either one exists, send it.
Step one: the scoping call
Advertised as a discovery call. In practice it is a scoping call, and the questions are deliberately awkward.
What is the product format, exactly? Not "vapes", but which hardware, which coil, what fill temperature, what oil base. What loading percentage are you running now? Which markets does this ship into, because that determines what we can put in it before we start. What does the finished product need to cost, and what is the terpene line item allowed to be inside that number?
Then the one people find uncomfortable: what does success look like, and who decides? A project with a named decision maker and a written target closes in six weeks. A project where three stakeholders each have a different idea of "premium gas" runs to twelve.
Bring your regulatory constraints to this call, not to week five. Reformulating around a market restriction after two rounds of sensory work is the most avoidable delay in this whole process.
Step two: fingerprinting the target
If you sent material, it goes to analysis. The point is resolution.
A basic compliance panel reports the dominant terpenes because that is all it is required to do. Research-grade methods go considerably further. Shapira and colleagues at the Technion published a static headspace GC-MS/MS method quantifying 93 terpenoids in cannabis in Analytical Chemistry in 2019, which is a reasonable indication of how much is present that a standard panel never reports.
Those minor compounds are where cultivar character lives, and they are also where drift shows up between runs. Two samples can match on myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene and smell obviously different, because everything that made one of them distinctive was in the fraction nobody measured. Matching a profile properly means seeing that fraction.

Step three: match and iterate
We build candidate blends against the fingerprint, drawing on a library of more than 150 existing profiles and, where nothing fits, from individual terpene isolates.
You get samples. You formulate them into your product, at your loading, on your equipment. You tell us what is wrong.
This is where the useful feedback matters, and vague feedback costs you a round. "Not quite right" gives us nothing. "The top note is too sharp in the first third of the cart and it goes flat by the end" gives us something to work with, and tells us the issue may be volatility and hardware rather than the profile itself.
Two rounds is typical. Three is common. If you are heading for round five, something in the brief is wrong rather than something in the blend, and the honest move is to go back to the scoping conversation.
Step four: stability in your matrix
The stage that kills more projects than any other, and the one people want to skip.
A blend that is perfect on the bench can behave differently once it is in your product and left alone for six weeks. Terpenes are volatile by nature, they oxidize, and they interact with whatever else is in the formulation. A profile can drift in an emulsion, separate in a beverage, or migrate into pre-roll paper. In a cart it can change the viscosity enough to alter how the coil wicks.
So the candidate goes into your actual matrix, in your actual packaging, and sits. Ambient and elevated temperature. Then it gets re-tasted and re-analyzed. The same oxygen, heat, light and headspace controls that govern bulk storage govern this test.
Skipping this is how brands end up with a product that reviews beautifully at launch and gets returns at month three. If you are on a hard deadline and something has to give, give up an iteration round, not the stability work.
Step five: production spec and documentation
What lands at the end is a specification, not just a bottle. Final blend, COA, safety data sheet, technical data sheet, and the handling and storage conditions the blend needs to hold its profile.
That paperwork is not admin. It is what your QA team needs to build an incoming goods check, what your compliance team needs for a state filing, and what your co-packer needs to run the blend correctly. Suppliers who deliver liquid and no documents are handing you a problem you will discover at the worst time. Documentation standards separate professional suppliers from garage style vendors.
What actually makes a project run long
Waiting on your sample. Weeks lost, routinely, to a courier and an internal approval.
Regulatory constraints introduced late. Covered above. Bring them to the first call.
No named decision maker. Committee formulation is slow formulation.
Feedback that is not specific. One vague round costs a fortnight.
Skipping the pilot batch. Bench results that were never reproduced on production equipment fall apart at scale, and you restart from the wrong place because everyone assumes the blend is at fault.

FAQ
How long does custom terpene formulation take? Four to eight weeks to production specification. Simple matches against an existing library profile land at the short end. Building a new profile from isolates with several rounds of iteration lands at the long end.
What do I need to send to start? A terpene sample is best. A COA from your lab works with caveats, since standard panels report only dominant terpenes. A written description works but adds iteration rounds. We cannot accept flower or THC vapes, those cannot legally be mailed.
Is there a minimum order quantity? It depends on the blend and the format, so it is a conversation rather than a fixed number. Bring your monthly volume to the first call and it can be answered quickly.
Can you match a competitor's product? We can fingerprint a terpene sample and build toward it. Whether the result is indistinguishable depends on how much of the original character came from the terpene profile and how much came from the rest of their formulation.
What happens if the blend does not work at scale? That is what the pilot batch and stability stage exist to catch before you commit volume. If something does surface in production, the fingerprint and the iteration history are on file, so the next round starts from data rather than from scratch.
Is this the same as picking from your catalog? No. Custom formulation means the blend is developed for your product, your process and your brand. If something in the Native® range already fits, we will tell you, because that is faster and cheaper for you.
Where to take this next
Have the sample ready, know your loading percentage and your target markets, and have one person empowered to sign off. Those three things are the difference between a six week project and a twelve week one.
