Terpene Dosing by Product Type: Carts, Gummies, Pre-Rolls and Beverages

A vape cart takes somewhere between 5% and 15% terpene by weight. A beverage takes between 0.1% and 0.5%. That is a hundredfold spread across two products made from the same ingredients, and the reason has almost nothing to do with flavor preference.

Here is the table, then the physics behind it.

Those are starting ranges, not answers. Your number depends on your base material, your hardware and your matrix. Why the spread is so wide

Three variables move the number, and they pull in different directions depending on format.

How much the matrix masks. In a cart, terpene is doing 100% of the sensory work. In a mango gummy it is competing with sugar, acid, pectin and a fruit flavor system. The more the matrix contributes, the less terpene you need and the less of it survives anyway.

Whether the terpene has a mechanical job. This is the one people miss. In a cart, terpene is not only flavor, it is a viscosity modifier. Get it wrong in either direction and the hardware misbehaves. In a gummy it has no mechanical role at all.

How the terpene is delivered to the consumer. Inhaled, eaten or drunk. Each route has completely different thresholds and completely different physical constraints.

Vapes: the terpene is doing two jobs

Distillate is thick. Terpene thins it. That is why the range for distillate sits at 8% to 12% while live resin, which already carries its own native terpenes, needs only 3% to 5% on top. That difference also changes the cost case for the premium tier, since you are using less of it.

Load too low and the oil is too viscous to wick properly. Load too high and you get flooding and leaking. The window is narrower than the headline range suggests once you fix your hardware.

The loading also changes what the device actually delivers. Meehan-Atrash and colleagues published work in RSC Advances in 2021 comparing vaping liquids at 0%, 7.2% and 14% beta-myrcene by mass. THC transferred per puff went from 1.6 milligrams at 0% terpene to 4 milligrams at 14%. Total volatile organic compounds went down rather than up at the higher loading. Their explanation is that terpene lowers the boiling point and the viscosity of the mixture, so the coil runs cooler and works more efficiently.

Which means loading is a potency decision as well as a flavor decision. Two carts with identical THC on the label can deliver quite differently if their terpene loading differs.

Temperature matters at the point of use too. Monoterpenes vaporize around 155°C to 180°C and sesquiterpenes need above 200°C, with a typical operating range of 180°C to 230°C. Push much beyond that and you are not vaporizing the profile, you are cooking it. Niu and Zhu ran two common monoterpenes through conditions that mimic vaping coil temperatures and published in Scientific Reports in 2023: across 100°C to 300°C, unreacted alpha-pinene dropped from about 57% to about 42%, with 36 distinct reaction products formed. The profile arriving at the consumer is not the profile you blended.

Pre-rolls: the paper competes with you

1% to 3% by weight, so roughly 10 mg to 30 mg on a one gram joint. Start at 1.5%.

Adjust for what you are infusing. Mid-grade flower that already smells of something needs less, so 1% is fine. Trim and shake need more aromatic support, so 2% to 3%.

The variable specific to this format is moisture. Flower cured to 10% to 12% moisture absorbs and distributes infused terpene best. Drier than that and the material takes it unevenly. Wetter and you have bigger problems than terpene distribution.

The other one is the paper. Terpene migrates into it over time, which is why an infused pre-roll that smelled right on the production line can smell weaker at week six. Edibles: start low, because you cannot take it out

0.5% to 2% of the final product, starting at 0.5%.

Flavor-forward profiles earn their place here, which is what the Inspired® line is built for. Two things pull in opposite directions here. The matrix masks, so you need more than intuition suggests. But terpenes are potent aromatics and the failure mode at the top of the range is not "slightly strong", it is soapy, perfumed and inedible. There is no correcting a batch that went too far.

So work up in small steps and evaluate in the finished, cured product rather than in the mix. Flavor perception changes as a gummy sets and as a chocolate tempers.

Fat content is the variable to watch. Terpenes are lipophilic, so they partition into the fat phase. The same 1% in a high-fat chocolate and in a fat-free gummy will not read the same on the palate. Our edibles formulation guide covers the format detail.

Beverages: flavor is not the constraint

0.1% to 0.5%, the lowest range of any format, and dosing is not really the hard part.

Terpenes do not mix with water. Getting them into a beverage at all needs emulsification technology, typically a nanoemulsion breaking the droplets below 100 nanometres so they stay stably dispersed. Solve that first, because an unstable emulsion separates on shelf and no amount of dosing adjustment fixes it.

Once emulsified, less goes further. The dispersed droplets present a lot of surface area, and aroma release in a cold liquid is efficient. Push the dose and you get soapy fast.

Then there is carbonation, which strips volatiles every time the pack is opened, and shelf life, over which the emulsion can drift. Beverage formulation is the format where you should absolutely not skip stability work.

Dialling in your actual number

  1. Start at the low end of the range for your format. It is much easier to add than to explain to a co-packer why the batch is scrap.
  2. Change one variable at a time. Loading, or hardware, or base material. Never two.
  3. Evaluate in the finished format, after whatever cure, rest or set the product normally gets.
  4. Use a blind panel of people who buy the category. Not the team that made it.
  5. Write down the conditions. Loading, base lot, hardware, fill temperature, date. Half the "the terpene changed" complaints turn out to be a fill temperature that moved, or a bottle that was stored badly.
  6. Re-check at four weeks. Especially pre-rolls and beverages.

FAQ

How much terpene do I add to distillate? 8% to 12% by weight for most distillate cart formulations. Live resin needs less, around 3% to 5%, because it already contains native terpenes. Confirm against your specific hardware, since wicking behavior varies.

How much terpene per gram of distillate? At 10% loading, 0.1 g of terpene per gram of distillate. Use the blending calculator to convert a percentage into volumes for your batch size rather than doing it by hand.

What happens if I add too much terpene to a cart? Flooding and leaking, and a harsh draw. The oil becomes too thin for the hardware to hold and wick correctly.

What happens if I add too little? The oil stays too viscous to wick properly, the flavor is thin, and the coil has to run hotter to move it, which degrades the profile further.

Why do edibles need so much less terpene than vapes? Because in a cart the terpene is doing all the sensory work and also acting as a viscosity modifier. In an edible the food matrix contributes most of the flavor and the terpene has no mechanical job at all.

Do terpenes affect how much THC a cart delivers? Published work suggests yes. In an RSC Advances study, THC transferred per puff rose from 1.6 mg at 0% terpene to 4 mg at 14% beta-myrcene, because terpene lowers the viscosity and boiling point of the mixture.

Can I use the same loading across my whole product line? No. Each format has its own range for physical reasons. A single percentage applied across carts, gummies and drinks will be wrong for at least two of them.
